Solutions to lower utility bills.

How can I lower my utility bills?

Lower utility bills?  Yes, it is possible. We hear that question just about every time we go into a customer’s home. We’re getting a much needed break in hot summer temperatures just when the utility bills from last month arrive in the mailbox to remind us of those days when the air conditioner never shut off!  The temperatures outside may have cooled some, but summer is not over and your air conditioner still has some work to do to keep you comfortable in the days ahead. Your air conditioner uses more energy than any other appliance in your home. Add to that scenario high humidity and temperatures in the 90’s and you’ve got the right recipe for a high utility bill. You do have some control over keeping that cooling bill in check.  Here are some solutions to consider.

Annual Maintenance = Lower Utility Bills

One step to control energy costs and lower those utility bills is to schedule annual maintenance checks to make sure your unit is running efficiently. Most cooling systems require very little owner maintenance. However, operating dirty cooling equipment can result in an unnecessary loss of efficiency and can damage the equipment. You play a vital role in making sure your cooling system continues to operate at peak performance.

Programmable Thermostats = Lower Utility Bills

According to KCP&L, you can save up to 20% on your heating and cooling costs by installing a programmable thermostat. These thermostats deliver maximum comfort, efficiency, and energy savings. Programmable thermostats are used to achieve the temperatures you want throughout your home when you need them, not while your house is empty.

High Efficiency Cooling Equipment = Lower Utility Bills

Purchase high efficiency equipment if you are in the market for a new air conditioner.  If your air conditioner is more than 12 years old, it's time to consider a replacement.  A more efficient air conditioner and furnace will lower your utility bill as well as conserve our natural resources. Pay close attention to the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) when selecting an air conditioner or heat pump. This is a measure of cooling efficiency for air conditioners. The higher the SEER, the higher the savings. The minimum SEER rating is 13 for air conditioners and 14 for heat pumps.  Be sure and ask your HVAC provider about local utility company rebates when getting estimates for new high efficiency equipment and, remember tax credits are available for installation of high efficient equipment.

Zoning = Lower utility bills

Zoning can make a big difference on comfort and lower utility bills. With zoning, you no longer have to pay to heat or cool areas of your home that are rarely used. You won’t have to heat or cool the whole house just to make one room comfortable. Zoning divides your home into separate comfort areas, which are heated or cooled based on your needs.
